Doctoral Degree in Nursing Sciences and Public Health

Description and course objectives

The Doctoral Degree in Nursing Sciences and Public Health aims to prepare researchers for both disciplines, who can contribute to the development of research methodology in nursing and public health. In their study path, the doctoral students acquire a solid foundation in the qualitative/quantitative research needed to develop the integration of disciplinary knowledge.
They must be able to conduct observational and/or experimental studies, integrate into multidisciplinary groups for research activities, and facilitate the integration of scientific knowledge with other disciplines.
Themes of interest include research methodology and epidemiology, global health, health economics, organization and health management.
During the PhD, the issues related to the health of citizens are mastered by providing theoretical reference and support for the decision-making process on how to deliver services, organization and training in preventive, curative and rehabilitative fields, by developing new health and welfare models.
Research is focused on social and health issues to identify health determinants and to implement prevention and control systems for infectious and chronic degenerative diseases, including also predictive models of disease risk and/or genetic susceptibility and cost-benefit analysis of the various possible prevention policies.

The Doctoral Degree in Nursing Sciences and Public Health is a unique example in the Italian framework and it is included in the Italian Sector for public selection 06 / M1. The PhD is strategic for the training of scholars, teachers and managers of the two disciplines.
Socio-economic changes in the country, with increasing chronicity, require the development of scientific and managerial skills essential for innovative approaches to assistance.

The reduction of hospital beds requires care models adapted to the territory to guarantee a continuous adequate welfare.

In this context, the convergence of medical/nursing professions and knowledge directed to public health, together with the interventions on the population regarding care, prevention and hospital support, appears strategic for the sustainability and the quality of the healthcare provided by the National Healthcare Service (Servizio Sanitario Nazionale, SSN).

Therefore, an integrated PhD in Nursing and Public Health represents a major resource for the country.

This doctorate has no affinity with other courses. It specifically focuses on the development of knowledge of the highest priority for prevention, cure and rehabilitation processes.
Nursing and Public Health are integrated disciplines that respond to the health and social needs of people to achieve a better quality of life, whatever the state of health from birth to death.
Integration allows for a cultural and operational interdisciplinarity, which is the foundation of modern care processes based on the mix of professionalism.
Research in the two areas is concerned with widening the knowledge on the global involvement of healthy or diseased people at all stages of life and in all social, cultural and environmental contexts.
The aim is to understand the individual and social dynamics determining the state of health in order to identify effective organizational, clinical and didactic intervention strategies.

Employment and professional possibilities
The Doctoral Degree in Nursing Sciences and Public Health allows different types of career.
  • Academic Career: Following the Law 240/2010, the Doctorate is the exclusive title to access the Researcher position.
  • Didactic Career: The PhD allows you to be a leader in teaching nursing and public health disciplines and be able to organize the education for nursing and health professions. In addition, it is expected that, for the nursing discipline, the Director is a person belonging to the professional profile of reference and this requires specific skills that can be acquired with a doctorate.
  • Organizational Career: The high scientific training of the PhD is an advantage for the training of nursing and public health care managers. The current challenges of health systems require the development of effective and efficient innovative organizational models, where methodological research skills represent an indispensable resource.
  • Clinical Career: Continuous scientific production requires competent users of scientific knowledge. Therefore, the PhD offers the opportunity to train highly experienced professionals able to be leaders in applying research results in clinical practice.

National and international collaborations
The Doctoral Degree in Nursing Sciences and Public Health carries out its training and research activities in collaboration with important national and international institutions. Among the most important national institutions are: the Campus Bio-Medico University, the Sapienza University, the IRCCS Bambino Gesù Hospital, the Center of Excellence for Culture and Nursing Research of the IPASVI College of Rome, the Policlinico A. Gemelli. Among the international institutions are: the Linkoping Universitet (Sweden), the University of Eastern Finland, the New York University (USA), the Plymouth University (UK), the University of Pennsylvania (USA), the University of South Florida (USA), the Oregon Health and Science University (USA).

Research lines
Since its activation (2006), the Doctorate program has launched several research lines.
The main ones are:
  • Health and organizational well-being of nurses and health care personnel;
  • Self-care in people with heart failure and other chronic illnesses;
  • Palliative care;
  • Nursing Diagnosis and development of Nursing Minimum Data Set;
  • Quality of life in people with stroke;
  • Freelance nursing in Italy;
  • Stress and burnout in nursing students;
  • Adherence to therapy in people with osteoporosis.
