Biomedicine & Prevention
An Open Access Transdisciplinary Journal
Biomedicine & Prevention is a peer-reviewed, open access journal that publishes original research papers as well as review articles focused on prevention as well as promotion of health as the converging point of numerous competences in a global vision of Public Health as front-line discipline integrating physics, engineering and life sciences.
Reinterpreting the idea of Biomedicine with a “multifocal”, holistic approach is the key to rethinking Public Health in order to tackle the future health challenges of our globalized era. Prevention is a win-win strategy for private citizens and politicians alike. It reduces morbidity and mortality rates and positively impacts quality of life. As an example, the Centers for Disease, Control and Prevention (CDC) report that in the United States between 20 and 40 percent of mortality cases could be prevented through appropriate lifestyle modifi cations, including improved nutritional habits, increased physical activity and healthier routines/behaviour in general. Prevention is therefore a cost-effective measure which yields a $5.60 return for each dollar expended, and this estimate does not include the additional gains related to increased productivity and reduced illness-related absence from work. Building on these principles, prevention can be considered a common good, which involves a variety of different stakeholders, including medical doctors, technicians, researchers and politicians. Professor Leonardo Palombi, Head of the Biomedicine and Prevention Department of the University Rome Tor Vergata, founded the journal in 2015. The Editorial Board of Biomedicine & Prevention embraces a transdisciplinary approach and vision - the Journal therefore covers a variety of subject areas: environmental sciences, engineering, physics, legal implications and legislations.
